Can you steal trainer items?
Thief no longer steals a Trainer’s Pokémon’s items permanently; however, a wild Pokémon’s item is still permanently stolen by the player.
Why do Pokémon hold items?
Held items can help your Pokémon deal extra damage, endure more attacks in battle, or even perform tricky strategies that aren’t possible through a Pokémon’s moves and Abilities alone. Held items are a great way to complement your Pokémon’s natural strengths to help them perform better in battle.
Can Pokémon hold items in Gen 1?
The ability for Pokemon to hold items was not introduced until gen 2, so there is no way to give an item to a Pokemon in gen 1 and then trade it up (however, some Pokemon that you caught in gen 1 and trade up to gen 2 will be carrying items by default, such as a certain berry).

How do you tell if a wild Pokemon has an item?
If the foe is holding an item, a message identifying the item will be shown right after the Pokémon with Frisk enters the battle. If the foe is not holding an item, no message will appear. In a Double or Triple Battle, an unidentified opponent is randomly chosen and their held item revealed.
Does covet still work if the Pokemon faints?
Even if the user faints when using Covet (such as due to the target’s Rough Skin), it still steals the target’s held item. Covet cannot steal an item if the target has the Sticky Hold Ability, or if it hits a Pokémon’s substitute.
