Why do you have to be 10 to be a Pokemon trainer?
To be a Pokemon trainer, you need to apply for and receive a Pokemon Trainer’s Licence. As only people of 10 years of age or older are allowed to apply, that means anyone below 10 cannot own any Pokemon, as they have no licence.
Why do trainers only use one type of Pokemon?
It’s a regulation in the Pokemon League. Regular trainers do it because they usually stick to one area and the types of pokemon that live there. I always imagine it as being quite difficult to get a Pokemon to bond with you well enough to train and battle effectively. Badges help, but aren’t enough on their own.

In season 14 (black and white) and 15 (Black & White: Rival Destinies) of course Ash can only have 6 pokemon on hand. I am not finished watching season 15 but ive counted that Ash has caught 8 pokemon so far and of course his pikachu. Since the episode where he caught sewaddle, he has had more than 6 pokemon.
